FAQs on antiques and
collecting...
Antiques, old stuff, a bit of history, or just junk?
Yes, some people may call it junk, but to millions of hungry antique shoppers in the world, this junk could be more precious than a new car! Antique malls and shops are popping up faster than fast food restaurant chains. Perhaps it is the idea of snooping through personal belongings, or the idea of peeking into the past for an afternoon, but for each person there is a reason to love antiques!
So how does a person go about finding antiques on the Internet? The most common way would, of course, be a search engine. These websites are handy for quick searches, however, they tend to include much more than what you are looking for. It is easy to understand how someone could get anxious and upset when looking for antiques and finding a website pertaining to new hair growth, or the ever present adult websites.
With that in mind, a service called The Antique Shopping Guide has come up with a solution to this problem! A new company that is just now beginning to make it’s presence known on the web, the antique shopping guide is a comprehensive list of antique dealers, malls, stores, small Mom & Pop type shops and more. They offer a broad range of advertising options for business owners to choose from, as well as a classified section for dealers without websites to promote their items.
You can browse through antique shops in your area, or, are you going on vacation soon? Look up antique shops in the area you plan on visiting and set up a schedule to visit them when you get there! Business owners also have the option of offering printable coupons for the customer to print out and take with them on their visit.

Our opinion may incorporate the opinions of others, provenance documented by others, or the opinions of recognized reference resources, over which we have no control as to accuracy. The use of the term in itself does not guarantee that an item is in fact 100 or more years old, but instead indicates that it is our belief that the item is approximately of that age.
- Any furnishing or other object that is 100 years old or older, but loosely applied to all old furniture. Technically, it should be confined to periods ending with Sheraton's style in Europe and with Duncan Phyfe's in America.
- Traditionally an antique meant an item produces before 1840 and made by hand. Customs officials in most countires have deamed items over 100 years old to be antique and therefore duty free. It has recently come to mean any item of special value or of historical significance. To purists however the 100 year rule is still used.
- Although opinions may vary, most experts feel that all dolls made prior to the 1930s are considered to be antique. The exception to this ruleuse to be the "composition dolls," but this is slowly changing and many collectors now accept pre-1930 compositions as antique as well.
- Depending on what industry you are talking about, it could mean something that's 50 years old (as in the furniture industry) or 5 years old (as in the computer industry)

While the word collectible can refer to many different things, in the Doll world a collectible is a doll that was made over 25 years ago butless than 75 years ago. Current dolls, made within the last 25 years, are considered to be "modern" and, as we discussed in antiques, anything pre-1930is deemed to be an antique. This is not a hard, fast rule, as we all think of our dolls as "collectible," but primarily the above rule applications are used.
